에이매스는 주거 밀집 지역에 있는 볼드커피가 가족과 친구를 만나 일상의 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 편한 공간이 되는 것을 디자인의 최종 목적으로 잡았다.
볼드커피의 지하층 층고는 4.5미터로 도심 건물의 일반적인 층고보다 높다.
또한, 새로 지은 건물의 지상1층과 지하1층에 위치하여 바닥, 천장 및 벽면은 마감이 되어 있지 않았다. 두개층을 연결하기 위해 설치한 내부 계단은 일종의 실내 선큰으로 자연광을 받아들일 수 있게 최대한의 면적을 확보하여 뚫려 있는 상태다.
에이매스는 이러한 공간적 특성이 흡사 도시의 야외에 있는 ‘공공공간’ 같다고 인식하였다. 우리는 약속 시간에 늦은 친구를 기다리며, 한여름 뙤약볕 아래서 길을 걷다가 잠시 숨을 돌려야 할 때, 간단하게 끼니를 떼우고자 샌드위치를 입에 물고, 종종 길거리 화단에 아무렇게나 잠시 앉곤 한다. 날씨만 허락한다면, 슈퍼마켓에서 커피나 맥주를 사서, 이런 곳에 앉아 마신다면, 이곳은 순식간에 카페나 펍의 야외 테이블처럼 전환된다.
에이매스는 볼드커피의 지하를 거리의 공용공간과 같은 기능과 분위기를 갖게 하도록 디자인하였다. 이를 위해, 벽돌, 그 중에서도, 길거리 인도의 바닥을 까는데 사용하는 벽돌을 전체 인테리어의 주요한 그리고 유일한 재료로 사용하였다. 이 벽돌을 이용하여, 카페 이용자들은 지정된 의자와 테이블이 아닌, 카페 안에서 자신의 영역(territory)을 자유롭게 만들어 편하게 앉아 쉴 수 있는 스트리트 퍼니처 형식의 좌석과 테이블을 만들었다. 이러한 의도를 극대화 하기 위해, 카페 내부는 사용상 불편함이 없는 최소한의 마감만 하였다.
그리고, 다양한 종류의 식물들, 특히 음지에서 생육이 가능한 화초들을 배치한 ‘실내화된 자연’을 만들어 우리가 일상의 도시 공간에서 체화하는 건축의 경험 뿐 아니라 조경의 경험까지 볼트커피의 지하공간에 재해석하여 조성하였다.

MASS OFFICE has set the ultimate design concept for the BOLD COFFEE to be a “Everyday” and “Casual” space for families and friends to gather and share, since the business is located in a high-density residential area. If you are looking for a space to work alone over a coffee, it should be Starbucks you head to, not us – BOLD COFFEE.
With dramatic 4.5m ceiling on B1, BOLD COFFEE occupies 2 floors -G1 and B1 – of a recently completed building and had no interior finishing and was exposed on the wall, ceiling and the floor. The indoor staircase that connects two floors acts as a light shaft where the natural sunlight floods in.
Such spatial feature reminded the design team of A. MASS OFFICE the casuality of the street where people tend to rest on the edge of a planter or the curb when looking for a place to sit with a quick bite on their hand or looking for a bench while waiting for a mate to show up. These unintended urban spaces are easily transformed into that of a Café or a Pub if you take-out an Americano or a beer from near-by convenient store.
To create the outdoor-like atmosphere, the special type of brick that is commonly used for outdoor pavement was chosen as one and only material. The street furniture-like furnishings defies to look like a regular tables and the seats at a normal café, it blends into the surrounding. The brick furnitures are composed to give freedom to the users to draw their own territories. Everything else has been toned down to emphasize the key concept.
The plantation is a big part of the design. The shade-friendly plants have carefully chosen to consider sustainability. This “Interiorized Nature” adds the extra “outdoor” feeling to the space, bringing urban experience into the basement space of BOLD COFFEE.
